INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT) IN EDUCATION

“Globalization and technological changes have created a new global economy powered by technology, fueled by information and driven by knowledge”.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education is the mode of education that uses information and communications technology to support, enhance, and optimize the delivery of information. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has become, within a very short time, one of the basic building blocks of modern society. Many countries now regard understanding of ICT and mastering the basic skills as part of the core of education, alongside reading, writing and numeracy. The recent efforts of the Government of India (GOI) seek to deepen the use of ICT in almost every sphere of life. ICT is a аррroach of teaching and learning where computers are used as   aid to establish communication (interaction) in different ways.

Meaning of ICT

ICT in Education refers any kind of technology that facilitates teaching and learning, improves learning environment and enhances learning outcomes. ICT covers any product that will store, retrieve, manipulate, transmit or receive information electronically in a digital form. ICT terms are combined from three different aspects.

  •   Visualizations: Graphs, Charts, Maps, Logos and other visualizations can communicate messages.

Technology

Technology derived from the word ‘techno’ which means technique, art or skill, and ‘logos’ which means science. Therefore, technology can be defined as a scientific knowledge of art or skill. Technologies include

  • Computers
  •  Internet
  •  Broad casting technologies (Radio and television)
  •  Telephony
  •    cell phones
  •   digital cameras
  •   robots
  •    Interactive multimedia and
  •   Video cameras etc.

Based on the three components, ICT as a whole can be described as the utility of technology to support the effort of conveying information and communication particularly in the area of education.
